GoldScout™

Karat gold calculator

Enter the weight and karat of any gold piece, from 8K to 24K. GoldScout™ works out how much pure gold is in it and what that is worth at today's spot price.

How karat works

Karat is parts of pure gold out of 24. 24K is pure gold, 18K is 75 percent, 14K is 58.3 percent and 10K is 41.7 percent. The rest is other metals like silver and copper.

What is my scrap gold worth?

Pick the karat, enter the weight in grams, pennyweight or troy ounces, and the Karat Gold Calculator shows the pure gold weight and its value at the live spot price. Buyers usually pay a percentage of that melt value.

Karat or carat?

Karat (K) measures gold purity. Carat (ct) is a unit of weight for gemstones. The calculator is for gold karat.

Everything in GoldScout™

Advanced mapping & land status overlay

9 topo and satellite maps (USGS Topo, OpenTopoMap, Esri, USGS Imagery, Sentinel-2) with geology, fault lines and LiDAR, plus a land status overlay that shows BLM, Forest Service and park land and active BLM mining claims, so you know where you can prospect.

River Gold Tracker (add-on, $5/mo)

Allows users to tap any creek or river to trace its flow. It follows the real channel, reads the LiDAR elevation profile and pins the slope breaks, inside bends and junctions where gold drops out.

Local GIS & satellite images

Local county and state GIS on the map: property lines in 28 states with owner names in 18, historic USGS topo maps, and satellite and aerial photos of your spot from the oldest available to the newest.

84,406 USGS gold mines & prospects

Every gold record in the USGS Mineral Resources Data System (304,632 mine records in all) on one map, filterable by producer, past producer and prospect.

LiDAR maps

Bare-earth LiDAR hillshade and slope, down to 1 meter, reveal tailing piles, ditches, benches and old workings under the trees.

Questions

How many inches of drop per foot for a sluice box?

About 1 inch per foot is the usual starting point, between about 5/8 inch for fine gold and 1 1/2 inches for heavy, coarse material.

Can my phone be a level?

Yes. Phones have a tilt sensor. The Sluice Box Angler reads it and lets you calibrate on a flat surface first.
